It has recently been revealed that Taylor Swift is the most commonly played artist in offices across the world.
Pure Property Finance analysed 100 Spotify playlists with titles including the word ‘office’ or ‘work’ in the title to reveal which artists and songs were the most commonly featured songs.
The top ten songs featured on these playlists were:
- Crazy – Gnarls Barkley
- 9-5 – Dolly Parton
- Home – SEVENTEEN
- Senorita – Justin Timberlake
- The Middle – Zedd
- Heaven – Bryan Adams
- Stay – Zedd
- Diamonds – Rihanna
- Kiss You – One Direction
- Shake it Off – Taylor Swift
These five office workers have given us their views on office music and what types of music would be their preference..
- Emma Hull, Senior Public Relations Specialist at Foundation, says:
“I’m often first in the office so I’m the one that gets to choose the playlist. I try and mix it up to keep everyone happy, but my two ideal genres would be noughties RnB or old school funk. Both of which gets everyone singing along!”
- Louise Balmforth, Head of Growth at Forth, says:
“We set up play lists for our office music so everyone gets chance to listen to the type of music they like. This can also be the cause of much office banter! But it can also expand your musical tastes and exposure you to new bands/artists. Our play lists range from 80s electronic, to 90s pop to a bit of Neil Diamond!”
- Lucy Bolland, Marketing Manager at Happy Beds, says:
“Taylor Swift is such a great artist and I can understand why she’s taken the number one spot here. I feel like her music is really upbeat which can of course get productivity up as people tend to work better to faster songs, but also her songs are the type of songs that everyone will sing under their breath – the young, the old, the male, the female, everyone!”
- Ben Newman, Content Specialist at Liberty Marketing, says:
“I don’t enjoy listening to music through headphones while in the office as I’m scared I’ll miss out on some seriously good office banter. At Liberty, we have one big playlist where each individual team has added 20 songs to it, and then we’ve put the playlist on shuffle. This makes it fair so that not every song is from the same genre.”
- Josh Bedford, Support Lead at Illustrate Digital, says:
“It’s incredibly rare to find our office without some sort of music on in the background. I’m admittedly a bit of a snob when it comes to music, so as much as I’d like to subject everyone to obscure indie tracks by bands like Car Seat Headrest and Neutral Milk Hotel, I know it doesn’t make me popular. Therefore we make sure to take it turns as much as possible with our playlist choices to keep everyone happy. This is actually one of the things I love most about being in an office space, as one moment we could be (badly) singing along to SClub7 and the next person might mix things up and play something by Metallica…
Since working remotely due to the pandemic, we found a great piece of software called JQBX which lets us collaboratively run playlists from wherever we are. I love this because it means we can retain that ‘office music’ feel without actually being there!”
